Description
During the tour, we will discover three major Gothic monuments of Paris: Notre-Dame de Paris (from outside), the Conciergerie and the Sainte-Chapelle. All three are located on the Ile de la Cite in the historical heart of the city just a hundred meters one from another. You will also visit the medieval church of Saint-Severin, a great example of flamboyant gothic style.
Aside from the story of the hunchback, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame impresses its visitors because of its refined architecture, statues, gargoyles and flying-butresses. The nearby Conciergerie is the best Parisian example of secular Gothic architecture. At first, the residence of the French kings, centuries before the Louvre or Versailles, it was later turned into a terrible prison, where Queen Marie-Antoinette and hundreds of prisoners spent their last days before being sent to the guillotine. Lastly, we will visit the Sainte-Chapelle skipping the long line at the entrance. Although some people consider the Middle-Ages to be a very dark period in European history, we will see how untrue this judgement might be using as an example the world’s most impressive medieval stained glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle.
